After a 40-day chase, the D N Nagar police have arrested a lawyer from his hideout in Goa for duping an author-cum-film screenwriter of Rs 45 lakh. Police said Yeshu Cheddha had absconded after Amarish Shah, screenwriter of Don 2 and co-writer of docu-drama ‘Beatification of Mother Teresa’, lodged a complaint in February.
Sources said Shah had got introduced to Cheddha at a workshop last year, after which he hired the lawyer to get patent rights for a book he had written then and 52 other works. Subsequently, Cheddha collected Rs 45 lakh over time. In the complaint filed in February, Shah said: “For the last few months, the accused gave excuses and showed patent rights for only 10 works.” Shah then terminated Cheddha and hired another lawyer who found that the 10 patent certificates were forged. “The accused made fake stamps and signatures of Controller General of Patents,” said a police officer.
Later, when Shah served a notice to Cheddha, he gave a cheque for Rs26.5 lakh but that too bounced. And when Cheddha learned about the FIR he applied for anticipatory bail, but the court rejected his plea.
Based on the FIR, a police team was formed to track the accused. An officer said Cheddha repeatedly changed his locations and used at least six SIMs to throw police off the trail. Police finally got hold of his personal number and tracked his location to a resort near Goa’s Anjuna beach.
Cheddha has been booked for cheating and forgery. He is in police custody till December 21.
