The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, who after a recent chopper
ride with politician Baijayant Panda in Odisha, was booked for tweeting derogatory comments about
the sculptures and statues of the world famous Sun Temple in Konark.
After perusing Iyer-Mitra’s tweets and related material, a bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K
Kaul and K M Joseph said, “How are you entitled to bail? You are inciting religious feelings with your
comments.”
As the bench appeared to take a prima facie view that there was nothing wrong with the charges
slapped against Iyer-Mitra, his counsel said if he was taken to Odisha to face trial, there would be a
threat to his life.
The bench said, “If your life is in danger, what better place than jail? Your life will be secure and there
can be no threat to it.” The bench dismissed the petition saying he was not entitled to bail. PTI
