An IPS officer has been arrested for cheating while appearing for the UPSC mains examination at the Presidency Girls Higher Secondary School in Chennai on Monday, various news outlets reported.
Safeer Karim, who secured the 112th rank in the 2014 UPSC examination, wanted to be an IAS officer. He was caught using a Bluetooth device to speak to his Hyderabad-based wife, who was dictating the answers, The Indian Expressreported.
The Times of India reported that Hyderabad Police took custody of his wife Joicy Joy, along with another associate named Rambabu.
According to the report, Safeer was already under the scanner of authorities as they believed he had also cheated in the first of five tests on Saturday.
While Safeer handed over his wallet and cellphone to the policemen posted outside the examination centre, he still managed to hoodwink them.
"He had concealed another phone and wireless earpieces in his socks and a miniature camera in his shirt," The Times of India quoted an officer as saying.
Hindustan Times reported that Safeer would face dismissal from the IPS as he was under probation, serving as an Assistant Superintendent of Police at Tirunelveli.
The Hindu added that the police booked Safeer, a Kerala resident, under Section 420 (cheating) and 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code as well as relevant sections of the IT Act, 2003.
According to media reports, Safeer is popular among civil service aspirants in Kerala. He along with his wife run a civil services coaching classes called Karim’s La Excellence, which has branches in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Bhopal and Hyderabad.
