CRACKDOWN ON FOREIGN FUNDING: 62 NGOS FROM AHMEDABAD CITY LOSE LICENCES

In yet another crackdown on NGOs receiving foreign funds, the Centre has cancelled licences of 378 NGOs from the state, including 62 from Ahmedabad, for violating Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. The government cancelled the licence of kidney institute on at Civil Hospital for failing to to file returns on foreign funding. Old NGOs like Jyoti Sangh, Sadvichar Parivar and Vikas Gruha at Paldi too bore the brunt of their own negligence.

The licences of Lalbhai Group Rural Development in Naroda and Sarabhai Foundation in Shahibaug have been cancelled. Sujata Mahila Paper Utpadak Sahakari Mandal functioning from SEWA reception centre in Ellisbridge also lost its licence. The Lions Club of Karnavati Foundation at Gota and Vishwa Gujarat Samaj in Navrangpura too will become defunct. The Centre also cracked down on five organisations including Methodist Church in Raikhad that works for Christian welfare, as well as Madrasa Arabia Islamiya in Juhapura.

In an order, Union Home Ministry said that notices were issued to 10,343 NGOs for not filing annual returns for 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12. Several NGOs failed to reply to the notice leading to cancellation of their registration issued under FCRA, stated the notification issued on Monday. However, Gujarat does not lead the chart. It is topped by Andhra Pradesh, where 1,441 licences of NGOs were cancelled. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh (1,167 licences) and Tamil Nadu (1,108 licences). Gujarat ranks eleventh while Sikkim with 10 cancelled licences is the last on the list.
