New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) plans to launch a toll free helpline for women in distress. NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma said the helpline was likely to be launched in the next three months. “The call centre will provide counseling and other services for women in distress. We are working out the details,” she said. The commission plans to provide a link to supporting services like professional help for medical, legal, rescue and rehabilitation besides an awareness of laws related to women.
Sharma denied BJP’s charge of being “hand in glove” with Congress saying the agency did not act in a biased manner. “If they are claiming that I have a biased attitude then it’s absolutely incorrect because if I have taken cognizance in Uttar Pradesh, then also in (Congress-ruled) Rajasthan. In fact, in Rajasthan we have taken cognizance twice. I am not ready to accept their allegation,” Sharma said.
