Ahmedabad: Come Monday Ahmedabad city will have a new license plate series — GJ-27. As part of the decentralization of the regional transport office, this series will be the identity for vehicles registered in east Ahmedabad.
The other two sub regional offices of the Ahmedabad RTO will be set up in Vastral and Bavla. These offices will have different vehicle codes.
J M Bhatt, Ahmedabad regional transport officer, said that the Vastral sub regional office will be inaugurated on Monday. He said that at present, all new vehicles registered with the Ahmedabad RTO get GJ-1 as the first three digits of its alpha-numeric code. All vehicles from areas like Naroda, Narol and Bapunagar will have the GJ-27 code once Vastral RTO is functional.
The Bavla sub regional office will focus on rural areas in Ahmedabad. Once this office is operational, vehicles registered in west Ahmedabad areas like Bopal will bear the GJ-28 registration.
Bhatt said that decentralizing the Ahmedabad RTO was the need of the hour. “The Ahmedabad RTO caters to 1.4 crore people and was probably the biggest RTO in Asia. Once decentralized, the main RTO within the city will cover about 50 lakh vehicle owners, the Vastral office will handle around 20 lakh owners and the Bavla office will handle 60 lakh vehicle owners,” he said.
