NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Chattisgarh government and the Centre to disband use of ill educated, ill trained and ill equipped tribal youth as Special Police Officers (SPO) to fight Maoist and Naxals.
The apex court directed the state to immediately withdraw all arms and ammunitions from SPO's.
It also asked the Centre to stop funding states for recruitment of SPO's. It could be a setback for many states which have employed SPO's to fight Naxals and militants.
