AHMEDABAD: Animal rights organisation 'People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA), on Wednesday, announced conferral of an award on Gujarat high court's justice M R Shah who gave a judgment last week to free caged birds.
The order said to free 494 birds and animals from cages in Surat, where justice Shah observed that birds have the right to fly freely in the sky and they cannot be kept in cages. The judge discussed the right to freedom of birds and animals, and wrote in the judgment, "Everybody is talking about fundamental rights of the citizen, such as, right to live freely, right to food, right to move. A day has come to think about the rights of the birds and animals ..."
Lauding the judgment, PETA, India announced that the judge would receive its 'Compassionate Action Award' for his compassionate decision. Sources, however, doubt if the judge will accept the award.
