The Ministry of Defence has asked the Assam Rifles in Manipur to institute a court of inquiry against a Major for allegedly obstructing a judge of the Gauhati High Court here on Wednesday from going to Lamphel to attend an official function.
Justice Tayenjam Nandakumar of the High Court's Imphal Bench was proceeding to Lamphel to take part in a function in which Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur opened the district court building. Some Assam Rifles vehicles under the command of the Major did not allow his vehicle to overtake them. When a jeep carrying the security guards of the judge overtook the Army vehicle, the personnel blocked the judge's car. A heated exchange followed. In the meantime, Justice Nandakumar's car went away through a flyover.
On Thursday, Assam Rifles officers tried to tender an apology to the judge, but he did not entertain it. Sources in the Assam Rifles said appropriate action would be taken against the Major if he was found guilty.
The Gauhati High Court Bar Association has threatened to launch an agitation if action was not taken against the Major.
