Ahmedabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials have arrested an Income Tax (I-T) official from Gandhidham for accepting bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh.
The arrest was effected on Wednesday on the basis of a complaint filed against I-T official Balkrishna Nair by Naveen Patel who runs a building construction business in Gandhidham, Kutch.
The complainant said that an I-T search operation was carried out by Nair and his team at his office. “Patel alleged that Nair told him that he would have to pay Rs one crore as penalty for tax evasion. He later offered that if Patel did not want to cough up such a huge amount, he would have to pay him Rs 10 lakh. Nair allegedly promised him to close the case if he agreed to pay the amount. Patel said he paid Rs 7.5 lakh to Nair, while Rs 2.5 lakh remained to be paid,” an ACB official said.
Patel then filed a complaint with the ACB which laid a trap to catch Nair red-handed while accepting the bribe. “Nair was caught taking Rs 2.5 lakh as bribe and arrested,” the official said.
