Mumbai: Goa’s education minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate was detained at Mumbai airport by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) early on Saturday. Monserrate was on his way to Dubai when AIU sleuths detained him for allegedly carrying foreign currency worth around Rs 1 crore. Passengers travelling abroad are allowed to carry currency worth $5,000 only without Reserve Bank of India permission. For more amount, due permission is required.
Monserrate was detained around 4am while on his way to board a flight to Dubai and the currency, in Euros, was seized. Officials said the minister was also carrying an additional Rs 24 lakh. ‘‘Monserrate arrived from a domestic flight and was clearing immigration to board his flight to Dubai. We found lots of foreign currency, mainly Euros and some dinars. The value of the undeclared currency was much more than permitted,’’ said a senior AIU official.
‘‘We are in the process of recording Monserrate’s statement and ascertaining the source of the money.’’
