New Delhi: A woman litigant, unhappy with the slow pace of her trial, stunned the Delhi high court on Thursday by stripping inside the courtroom. She tried to strip again later when the judge heard the matter in his chamber.
A shocked Justice Ajit Bharihoke then dispatched Nisha Priya Bhatia, a former director-level officer of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), to the Institute Of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences for a mental health check. Bhatia has had an unfortunate history as she levelled allegations of sexual harassment against one of her superiors in RAW, then attempted to commit suicide before the Prime Minister’s Office two years ago, for which she is facing trial in a lower court.
“The behaviour of the petitioner (Nisha Priya Bhatia) in baring herself in the court is highly deplorable and it gives an impression that she is not mentally sound. She even claims that she had bared herself before a bench of CAT as well as SC and will continue to indulge in this act,” Justice Bharihoke observed.
Bhatia, in her late forties, created a ruckus when the court began proceedings on Thursday where her petition against two officers of subordinate judiciary was listed. The judge said she barged into the front row and took off her clothes, shouting obscenities. The court, which had ordered her detention in the forenoon when she took off her jacket after the hearing on her case was adjourned, summoned Bhatia again in the post-lunch session to find out why she took the drastic step. But instead of apologising, Bhatia again attempted to remove her clothes and began shouting in the judge’s chamber; convincing him she needed immediate psychiatric help.
