Lawyers observe strike

Ahmedabad: Gujarat high court advocates remained away from work on Tuesday to register their protest against the Centre’s and the Supreme Court’s alleged ill-treatment to Gujarat by not appointing judges.
Though the HC has a sanctioned strength of 42 judges, the incumbency is even less than 30. The Gujarat High Court Advocate Association’s president Yatin Oza said, “We are protesting the Centre’s inaction and the Supreme Court’s cold reaction to the Centre when it’s not following the SC’s directive.”

He alleged that the Centre had not appointed any judge for the past 19 months in Gujarat despite repeated requests but took fast actions in case of other states, making appointments in three to four months.
The lawyers prevented others from going inside the courtrooms, but one lawyer KM Paul refused to join the strike and went ahead to argue his client’s case.
