Ahmedabad: Following protests from various bar associations, the Gujarat high court has suspended its decision to keep the lower courts open on the second and fourth Saturdays from next year.
The notification issued in July this year directing lower judiciary to work six days a week was with a view to reduce the number of pending cases. At present, nearly 22 lakh cases are pending in the state’s courts, including the high court. The circular had a provision that in a month, where there are five Saturdays, the courts will remain closed on the fourth Saturday. However, members of various bars were not happy with the decisionon the ground that they were not taken into confidence by the state judiciary on this issue.
