Mumbai: A 37-year-old Bhayander resident’s hopes of being reunited with his first cousin who he had married were dashed on Monday. With the Hindu Marriage Act banning marriage between first cousins, the Bombay high court refused to entertain his plea that his “wife’’ be allowed to go with him.
“If the request was to be considered, it would be (tantamount) to putting a seal of approval on the relationship, which is not permitted by law,’’ said a division bench of Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice U D Salvi. The judge allowed her to go with her parents. “She is an adult and free to take her own decisions,’’ said the judges, adding that he could decide her plans in consultation with her parents.“the law does not permit you and her to stay together’’.
